AV-8B Aerodynamics: Local Develpment Remote Deployment
When tasked to update an aerodynamics model for the Italian Mission Simulator, by a Spanish company, Indra, Bihrle Applied Research needed to work within the customers simulation structure and provide timely updates of the new model. Bihrle was able to meet these requirements
using the D-Six Simulation Environment and Aeroport. To minimize the amount of onsite engineering time required for model development and validation, Bihrle implemented the AV-8B flight model in the D-Six environment. As part of the implementation, the aerodynamics database was
converted to the D-Six infofile format. This allowed engineers rapid access to the existing aerodynamics data and allowed the dataset to be converted to third party software tools like MATLAB, with Aeroport. Using MATLAB the aerodynamic model structure and data were updated then
converted to the D-Six format again using Aeroport. Once in the D-Six native format, validation tests were performed. When the simulation was ready for transmission, using Aeroport, the aerodynamics database was converted back into the trainer database format and verified in D-Six. The
complete process of converting data from MATLAB to D-Six to the trainer format took less than five minutes. The resulting simulation code was transmitted to Spain electronically where it was compiled and linked with the trainer hardware for piloted evaluation.
