Advanced Trainer Powered Testing

In
an USAF-sponsored Small Business Innovative Research effort, a comprehensive
propeller-powered testing and simulation modeling technique was developed
and demonstrated. Novel concepts, such as incorporating a motor-isolating
support and utilizing COTS R/C electric motor as the power plant, were
investigated and tested. The measured power effects on aircrafts
basic aerodynamic characteristics and its elevator and rudder authorities
were identified and correlated with full-scale flight characteristics.
Bihrle had developed a unique powered-test technique maximizing the
geometric flow similarity between the sub-scale wind tunnel environment
and the full-scale flight conditions for a wide range of airspeed to
address shortcomings of conventional powered testing. The resulting
data provides representative aerodynamic characteristics for performance,
and stability & control analyses.
